muscles

November 29, 2004 by Jane

Winter cold makes it hard to write every day. Also the whole “it’s painful to use a chair for extended periods” thing that I’ve had for almost a year. BUT ANYWAY, here I am writing. In my chair! My legs hurt a bit today, in a tired way. I walked a lot this weekend. And then after work today I swam 15 laps, which was awesome as the pool was not crowded. But I think I need to stay away from the hot tub at the Y, unfortunately. They put so much chlorine in there I end up feeling like I have chemical burns on my legs two minutes after I’m out of there. Seriously. Burning.

Did 15 laps (750 meters) in 20 minutes, including tiny rests between some laps. But that’s pretty good, for me. A couple weeks ago I was only doing ten laps in that time, because I kept taking such long breaks.

I’ve been swimming three or four times a week for a couple months now and haven’t lost any weight at all. So this means that while I have increased muscle mass somewhat, I really need to take a look at how I am eating, and need to do Pilates as much as I swim. I have fallen off quite a bit on how much I stretch.

I’m getting a car for a trip to Trader Joe’s on Thursday. So excited. Hopefully I can get two cases of two-buck Chuck and put them in the basement til the wedding. That would be ideal. Also I just love TJ’s so much. Gonna do some damage.

Holy shit I miss baseball season. Sigh.

ARGH winter is boring. And I hate all my books right now. I tried reading this book “Prague” but a third of the way through I just had to admit I didn’t give a crap about the characters. And the book I read before that — I kind of hated the people in that one, too. The books I have read this year have been either too bleak or too boring. I think I will steal Brian’s Lethem novel tonight and see if it grabs me. Someone online recommended this today, perhaps I’ll give that one a shot, as well.

I read that book Prague. Duh. I liked it but only because I knew the time and half of the places they were talking about, so I was actually interested in Budapest as a character, rather than any of the people. I think you’re dead right about it not being very interesting, though.

I tried so hard to keep reading it; like I said I was almost halfway done with it. But then it just seemed like absolutely nothing was happening and it was making me carazay. And the people were kinda, well, insufferable?

I also gave up on that book about a third of the way in. I couldn’t keep all those people straight in my head, because they all seemed equally boring. And yeah, the cities meant nothing to me so I couldn’t keep interest.

I just finished Fortress of Solitude a few days ago! I loved, loved, loved it. It also took me a bit to get into, but once I did I was hooked. It’s a powerful story. You’ll love it.
