So in spite of the fact that I don’t have any power mixers, I only own one medium-sized mixing bowl, and that I will completely trash the kitchen in doing so, I desperately want to make these cookies as holiday gifts. I just have to steel myself into actually doing it, because I know they’ll be worth it.

steeling self for impending kitchen chaos

Swam 15 laps today. My flip turn is horrendous. I need to practice a lot.

Trivia night at the gay bar tonight, yay! Here’s hoping we get in the top three this time and don’t get totally ambushed by another stupid “the cast of Falcon Crest” category.

  1. mmm those look great! Baking is a must around the holidays. I’m making homeade goodie gifts too…I’m on a stupid non-existent college budget hehe. I decided to make fudge and give it to people for christmas…er, as long as I don’t eat it all!

  2. I think you need an electric stand mixer to make those. What do you have, like a handheld mixer?

    • Alls I have is my hand and a wooden spoon. I have NUFFINK.

I may see if my landlady has something I can borrow.

      Wedding registries: good for something!

      • You can’t make those cookies by hand. There are rather inexpensive plug-in hand mixers available — you could probably get one at a drug store — but I don’t think those would do it either. Where the recipe says “electric stand mixer,” they’re not kidding.

On the other hand, electric stand mixers ROCK and you will be glad to have one.

  3. Drew and I made those the other night. FYI: 7 candy canes yields 1/2 cup crushed. They weren’t tough to do, kinda like making maki sushi, actually.

We did use my kitchen-aid ($10 from a lovely midwestern thrift store!), but you *can* make them by hand. Just let the butter get really, fully soft, and put your back into it when you are creaming the butter and sugar. People have been making sugar cookies since before the advent of mixers, and we make them all the time at Anodyne, in huge batches, with no mixer. And yeah, register for a kitchen-aid. Heh.

    • That is awesome! How did they turn out? Were they yummy? You’ve got me totally hooked on “Good Eats” now, my TiVo records it every night for me!

I’m sure sugar cookies can be made without a mixer… I mean, it’s a pretty old recipe, no?

And when are you coming out here? I want to write it in me calendar.

      • I don’t have dates, yet. January *sometime*, there are blackout dates that we have to work around. Even if Hawaii has to be postponed, I’ll still come out to the city. I have the whole month off of school, and I usually hotwire.com my SFO tix, so it’s all flexible. Mid-later in the month is the slower time at my job, though.

And yeah, just really beat the crap out of the (super-soft) butter and sugar first, then add in all of the other ingredients. Should be fine by hand. Bonding that butter and sugar is the key to the texture of the dough/cookies.

Alton is my secret husband. Sigh.
