april shower

April 4, 2005 by Jane

It rained for my bridal shower, but I guess that’s sort of fitting. Let me just say having a car was pretty sweet yesterday.

Tamara and Ert put together an amazing party. It was all elegant and fancy and stuff. I know Tamara loves entertaining; you can tell she’s had a lot of practice. The linens and flowers and china were all lovely. We had incredible creme brulee in wee ramekins. We had homemade quiche. We had the mimosas, which were I think the only thing I specifically requested. The best part of all was having so many of my girlfriends all together in one place. It was a very girly time.

One of the other best parts was the henna tattoos. Ert brought out these cute tissue-wrapped mendhi kits and we set about painting on each other’s hands and feet. I think next time I will leave mine on for like 6 hours so it can really set in. But it was still awesome. We had fantastic food and drink and conversation and it was totally the best shower I could have hoped for. Thank you to my homies.

Countdown to the wedding really starting in earnest. What’s left to do? Brian still needs a new shirt. We need to finish up the favors and table cards. Um. Need to touch base with photographer and band and basically make sure they are where they need to be on time. Haven’t really done much to organize the rehearsal dinner, but it’s just a casual party at our house and people have offered lots of help, so that should be fine.

I hope I don’t stress out too much in the next 2 weeks. Being the bride means putting a lot of pressure on yourself to make sure everything goes perfectly (see previous entry). I was thinking about it this morning, this whole sick wedding industry thing that makes a woman suddenly feel like she has to be “perfect” for this one “perfect” day. Why not just be yourself? Be the person your futurehusband fell in love with. Check out a wedding planning site sometime, you see constant references to the perfect dress and the perfect cake. It’s kind of gross after awhile. Nobody’s perfect. So what if my skin isn’t flawless on my wedding day — when has my skin ever been flawless?

        I’m ‘anonymous’ purse-buyer from Oregon!

And I’m so excited for you!

Just relax and enjoy your wedding day despite anything that is not “perfect.” It sounds trite, but having been through it a couple years ago, I think it’s still so relevant. The best part of our wedding day was after the ceremony and reception were all over when my new husband and I took our formal clothes off and hung out with our homies. We went hiking and swimming and drank wine! (We got married at Timberline Lodge at Mt. Hood.) Anyhow, the rest of the day was fantastic, but, nothing went exactly as I had envisioned. If I had to do it all over again I would’ve just enjoyed more, ya know?

Anyway, best wishes to you and your futurehusband!

    rehearsal dinner

I don’t know if you are having the dinner catered, or delivered, but it can be real simple, BBQ, Lasagna? Just make sure you have someone to do the clean up. This is not what you want to come home to after the marriage. Love, Mom
