Just had my second big celebrity sighting here in SF. Third if you count mayor Gavin Newsom, fourth if you count Mark Kozelek (I know, who?).
I was walking to the train from French class and decided to take Mason instead of Powell so as to avoid the hopeless herds of dawdling tourists trudging past Union Square. Walked up Post, and noticed a sign outside one of the theatres for a show starring Bebe Neuwirth. Huh, I thought to myself. I’ve always liked her a lot, especially her performance in the movie “Tadpole.” Anyway, as I walked past the small theatre entrance, I peeked curiously inside, wondering if by chance she would be just hanging out in the lobby… nope.
So I walked along toward Mason, and who should I see walking straight toward me? Yep. Bebe Neuwirth. She of course looked fabulous. Petite, no makeup, red leather blazer, long dark hair, and seemed to be concentrated in thought. After she passed I turned to look, like a big ol’ lookie-loo, and sure enough, she slowed at the theatre entrance and stepped inside. I was all pleased with myself. You see, one very rarely sees celebs here in our little coastal burg.
For those wondering what was my first big celebrity sighting in SF, it was at the 1000 Van Ness theatre. I was there to see “Monsters, Inc.” I went to get some snacks before it started, and in front of me in line (in the otherwise empty lobby; it was a Wednesday night) was a tall, blonde, striking woman: Sharon Stone. She ordered two bottles of water and two medium tubs of popcorn (gross!) for herself and her now-ex-husband Phil. The counter girl screwed up the order and Sharon was displeased. She then dashed into the already darkened theatre to see “K-Pax” (hah!). A moment later, Phil appeared and went in to join her.
And that is the end of my brushes with fame.

hey, i’d count mark kozelek! that’s pretty cool.
