j’ai mal a la dos

June 7, 2005 by Jane

My French teacher (il est Americain) said that he hasn’t watched television in thirty-five years. In other words he last watched television before I was born. The mind boggles. Did he stop watching TV just after the moon landing? Was that the pinnacle in televised entertainment?

He of course still watches many films, but only good ones, only art films! He also speaks several languages and seems to have traveled and lived all over Europe and South America. He’s an interesting fellow. We have interesting talks about French culture etc, which is great, but at times I want to move the conversation back to the lesson. I think it must be easier to get off topic as I am the only student in class. If there were two or three of us, there would probably be less chit chat. Ah well, c’est la vie.

I am having a nice day. I got to have lunch with my husband, and I got to window shop after French class and drool over adorable expensive handbag that I want. It’s fun to justify the $400 bag by saying that (a) I can get it for $300 on ebay! and (b) I saw in Us magazine that famous celebrities carry around $1500 and $5000 (!!) handbags like it ain’t no thang. So $300 is a BARGAIN!! Then I leave the store and ride home and think about what to make for dinner.

Chicago trip is starting to take shape. I think we will be there from August 29 – Sept 4. Six nights of the “windy” city, though of course I reckon SF is much windier, and the “windy city” nickname is in fact from a late 19th century political cartoon describing the bluster and hot air emanating from Chicago politicians. Just sayin.

Actually, There’s some references to the term “Windy City” before that cartoon was published.. Actually referring to the wind coming off the lake.

But yeah, it’s really not that windy.

Anyhow! On Tuesdays, the Art Institute (200 block of S. Michigan) is free of charge, so it’s pretty cool to go see American Gothic and the tooth of John the Baptist, fuh-free.. And if you go, wave at the Santa Fe building across the street! That’s where I work.

And! http://www.chicagoreader.com/ has all the hip stuff happening around town & a good apartment search, while http://hottix.org/ has half-price tickets for events. Have fun!!

Thanks! Cool. I guess we should start thinking about what exactly we want to do, besides pretend to look for jobs and apartments.

I assume you’re going to be renting a car? If not, I’d be happy to drive you around and clue you in about what the neighborhoods are like, where’s a good place to live and where isn’t. I’d also love to take y’all to dinner or make you a meal one of those days; I’ll be in my new apartment by then, wherever that is.

Also, the Sox are playing Detroit AGAIN over that week, so you could extend the tradition of watching us spank the kittycats…

We are going to try to be car-less — it’s an excellent way to really be in a city, IMO. I’ve still yet to take the El. Plus all our Chi-pals have cars 😀

I would love to enjoy some of your cooking that I have been hearing about for so long! We will plan for that. And of course I am always up for a baseball game. It will give Brian some quality time with his boys, heh. So please get me a ticket if you wanna go…
