rooting for the losers

July 7, 2005 by Jane

Brian got free tickets for a Giants game on Tuesday. Really good seats, too. Only 26 rows up from the Giants dugout, pretty much above the bullpen, along the third base line. They were playing the Reds.

I was totally excited and chattered away at Brian while he giggled at me. I hoped our team would manage a win. I figured it would still be fun to see the game, and it almost always is, even if my team loses. Well except for that one A’s-Yankees game last year when we were stuck sitting in front of some rude Yankees fans, and then had to endure the A’s blowing a huge lead and the Yankees finally pulling away by a wide margin. That was unfun.

Anyhoo. The Giants got off to a 2-0 lead. “Don’t fuck it up!” I said. (Oh, but they soon did.) Lowry gave up a ton of hits. Our guys kept knocking these high popups into the infield. And not turning double plays. Sigh. The guys around us started heckling. For some reason, I don’t mind the heckling, but ONLY if it is well-informed and mildly witty. Such as, “Pack your bags, you’re going to Fresno, Lowry!” etc. Heh.

The ballpark was fairly unfull. In fact I think our row only had five people. Lots of empty seats, so maybe 75% full. I wished I had brought my binoculars so I could spy on the press box. Former Giant Rich Aurilia, now on the Reds, got a nice applause for his first at-bat. Which is a stark contrast to former Giant Jeff Kent who is always LOUDLY booed for EVERY at-bat when he comes here, because he is a redneck jackass mustache.

Got to see Ken Griffey Jr. bat. He started out on the Mariners when I was a kid and was one of the Mariners’ first huge stars. I remember seeing Ken Griffey Jr. candy bars in the drug store. He was a big deal in Seattle back then.

So yeah, the Giants lost. The usual stuff, poor pitching control and not swinging the bat very well. Lost to a guy who has given up like 30 homers.

However, the evening did end on a high note. As we were getting ready to leave, the lady who had been sitting in front of us with her friend stopped to talk to me. They were a couple of older gals in their 50s or 60s, both obvious baseball fans. I totally love it when I see these old broads at the game with their caps and pins, just blowing away the stereotype that women can’t get into sports. She stopped me and said, “I didn’t mean to overhear, but you know a lot about baseball!”

I blushed I’m sure and just replied thank you, and that I love the game.

Even when my team sucks.

Maybe I should take it to the next level and start bringing a scoring pad.
