I just took a little walk down the Embarcadero to the Ferry Building. The sky is stubbornly grey right now, but I didn’t need my coat. As I walked along I was passed by several women jogging. One had perfectly toned legs, her calves sculpted, shaved smooth. Her gait made me think of how ponies trot around the ring in an equestrian show. Clip clop clip clop.
As always the Ferry Building was crowded with tourists. Slow-moving, confused-looking tourists. It’s a cheese store, people. Yes, they only sell cheese. I know, it is fascinating. Mrow.
I bought some Scharffen Berger chocolate. They are a local and very good chocolatier (much better than Ghirardelli), but they were recently purchased by Hershey. Let’s see how long it takes for their brand to decrease in quality and increase in price. Did you know Godiva chocolate is owned by Heinz Ketchup? True story.
I also got a cup of Peet’s coffee, speaking of local small businesses. It’s super strong and is going to make me all crazy.
So following my leisurely stroll, I headed back to work. The bay looked extremely calm and glassy, battleship green. More joggers passed. I wished my knees and back were good enough to do that. Though I don’t think running on cement would do them any favors.
Tonight: clean leftovers out of fridge. Relax and watch some Tivo. Make a plan for next week to bring all my lunches from home. I think the food in the cafeteria upstairs is making me sick. It’s always so greasy and overcooked. The only thing to be trusted is the sandwiches, oatmeal, and toast in the morning. The rest tastes bathed in butter.

beautiful entry, i work right by the ferry building…we should meet up one day!
Sure, why not! I didn’t realize you lived in the city.
i live in the east bay and commute to work everyday (williams&sonoma inc. on davis/broadway) i have been packing my lunch too- we should eat on a bench there one day and then buy coffee!
I’m up for it. How’s about Monday? I’m thinking of taking PTO tomorrow because my office is in a “freeze” state (our project is in testing prelaunch mode so we can’t really do anything to it, so I’ve been literally sitting around all week, and getting paid for it).
Shoot me an email: janehex at hotmail
Peets!!! That Uncle Erwin-whatever you call it blend is really nice.
And, Chicago’s ‘local coffee’ brand is called Intelligistia. It’s no Peets, but it’s great because it’s super fresh.
BTW, I recall you writing that you were using public transportation while you were here- http://tripsweb.rtachicago.com/ will help you plan. But, do not be fooled by the times on there.. Tack on a half hour or so 😉
The art institute over at 220 S. Michigan Ave is having a Henri Toulouse Lautrec exhibit right now. Can’t wait to sneak over during lunch!
Thanks for the link! I’m so used to using the trains here, and I managed to get by in New York, London, and even in Tokyo (sorta), so hopefully Chicago won’t be too much of a challenge.
I THINK we went to the Art Institute when we were there in 2003, I would definitely go again.
Awesome! And, hit up Millenium Park, if you’re in the neighborhood. There’s this big metal sculpture there nicknamed “The Bean” that is being just finishing being polished and will be *finally* un-tarped before you arrive.
It’s neat! It’s a giant, silver bean!
UGH I can’t believe they sold out to HERSHEY! That makes me want to cry =(
Yeah I totally can’t believe it, it seems so greedy.
Hershey also decided to buy Joseph Schmidt Chocolatier during their little shopping spree.
So of the four chocolate makers in the SF Bay Area, Hershey now owns two. Their reasoning: “We see Joseph Schmidt as being an excellent complement to our portfolio.”
Yucky disgusting corporate-speak. Bleah!!!!
all the good chocolate
Yah its funny but the really good british chocolate, Organic Green & Blacks, was recently bought by *shudder* Cadburys. Soon we will have to start growing our own!
jogging
You know I belong to 24 hour fitness, and they are “test-driving” the new Nautilus Treadclimber. It is awesome, (“the new running is walking”).If you haven’t seen the ads, it is a combination dependent stepper and treadmill hydraulic control and dependent on how long your stride is and how much you weigh (no more than 400#) So the effect is zip that heart rate up in no time flat with no stress on the knees or back. So far I have done 10 minutes, before I had to stop. Real endurance maker. Love, Mom
