Summer has finally arrived in San Francisco, at its usual time: a few days before the calendar says it should be over.
I just went down to the corner market near my office for a snack. I’m going to work out soon so I’ll need fuel for before and after, in the form of nuts and a banana.
After leaving the store, I was stopped suddenly on the sidewalk outside at the sight of an enormous monster of a caterpillar, just strolling across my path like a huge red gummi worm. I was so stunned that I had to pull out my camera phone and take a couple pics, but as there was nothing else in the frame, it’s hard to gauge the girth of this creature. Let’s just say it was at least as big as my pinkie finger. It moved fast. I wonder if it will survive long enough to pupify and become one of those giant moths that swirl around at the ball park.
It kind of reminded me of the time Brian and I had to stop to allow a Jerusalem cricket to pass. Google that only if you have a strong stomach for abnormally large and disgusting insects.
Anyway.
I think about things to write about every day, but don’t manage to get them down. It’s really quite sad. I’m sure you would all love to know what I think of the fact that apparently BART is building a goddamn station right smack in the middle of Duboce Park, sure to ruin the park and surrounding area as almost all BART stations in the City are magnets for garbage and noise. Who knows. Maybe they will still be able to keep the childrens playground and off-leash dog park right there next to the station, but I seriously doubt it.
We watched the Emmys last night and as I had feared, I was outraged and disappointed by the whole thing. Bland and boring garbage wins out over original and hilarious comedy. Safe, middle-of-the-road performances are rubber-stamped, yet again. I don’t know why I was surprised, and I don’t know why I wasted three precious hours of my weekend on that crapfest. Perhaps Jon Stewart and Conan O’Brien made it worthwhile, but only briefly. On that note, the funniest show on tv premieres this evening on FOX. It is called “Arrested Development.” Warning: it doesn’t have a “laugh track,” so some viewers may be confused as to when they should find something amusing.
This weekend I sold some books. I only got store credit, so I finally bought “The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay” and also a collection of Graham Greene short stories. I wish I had a book with me right now to take to the gym, but I’m stuck with my iPod.
