painted face

April 23, 2003 by Jane

One would think that I would be more of a makeup-wearing girl, what with my long “struggle” with spots and so on. My mom wears makeup daily, in fact almost every girl I know does. Foundation, concealer, powder. Or is it concealer, foundation, powder? Hmm.

Anyway, I tried it in high school. But I was convinced that layering this strange liquid over my disturbed skin would disturb it even further, and I was probably right considering the junk I had at my disposal at the time. So I went without makeup. The only makeup I wore in highschool was a heavy ring of black eyeliner. God, it was cool.

Another moment of influence was the time I was standing in line at the cafeteria and noticed that the girl in front of me had a distinct line along her jaw separating the crust of orangey makeup and her actual skin tone. This was probably typical of a 16-year-old’s experimentations with foundation, but I never wanted it to happen to me.

So sure, I have some makeup in my bathroom cabinet. I have a nice semi-transparent Prescriptives foundation and tube of concealer, and a Stila pressed powder compact that I really like. But honestly I never remember to put them on, or maybe I am still scared they will just clog my pores. Sometimes I’ll brush on some powder if we’re going out somewhere nice and I wanna do my face up. But daily, it’s just lipstick for me, or more often than that, lip balm and nothing else.

Makeup is a special dress-up treat for me. I have some favorites: Fresh and Prescriptives for lipstick, Shiseido mascara (black), Stila powder and blush, Kiehl’s lip balm. For eyeshadow I don’t really care; they are all the same. I don’t use an eyebrow pencil or lip liner. Too much work. I am low-maintenance when it comes to this stuff.

I think that my reluctance in my teens to “learn” how a woman properly applies makeup has probably left me clumsy, technique-wise. And the fact that after high school, I spent the following seven years hanging around with dirty punk rockers — some of whom wore makeup, some of whom didn’t. But I don’t care. I would rather have clear skin.

Or better than that, I like that when I have a pimple on my face now, I don’t feel like it needs to be hidden. Brian said to me the other day that I was the only one who noticed when I was breaking out. And it’s true. I never notice zits on other people, so I can presume that people don’t really notice them on me. And if they do? Who cares.

Yes, it only took me fifteen years to come to this conclusion.

i never notice zits on other people either, but i sure notice them on me!! im obsessive about wearing makeup to the point where most days, if i leave the house without it, im struck with the need to get home asap the whole time im out. today im only wearing transluscent powder… occasionally i take makeup breaks if i feel my skin needs it, and right now, it does!! my pores are like saucers! even if my skin is clear my pores are still ubervisible and my skin tone is blotchy so i feel like i always need at least sheer foundation to even out the situation.

    i talk too much :D!

Don’t get me wrong, I admire someone who can wear makeup and make it actually look good on them, I’ve just never been that confident wearing it myself.

I have visible pores too; I think the pore refining toner I have been using might actually be making a difference (meaning : clearing out some of the gunk).

I think I have always been more obsessive about my hair than about makeup. It has to be something, right?

Yeah, I used to use a lot of makeup when I was a teen, and having really oily skin only made me break out more. But you sort of get in a cycle, where you have to wear the makeup to cover up the zits, but it only gets you more zits, and so you wear more makeup, blah blah blah.

After the Accutane, which totally cleared up my skin with the added benefit of also making me 90% less oily (still, years later, I love it), all I really wear is a little concealer to even out some splotchiness and some powder. That’s it. I haven’t worn eye makeup in years (or only on very special occasions) and I’m like you, I feel all clumsy about it. I can barely apply mascara, and I have no idea what eyeshadow colors look good on me.

Also, in the summer, I stop wearing makeup entirely. One, because when it’s too hot and I’m sweating, it’s just gross to put more stuff on your face other than a light moisturizer. Two, my skin tans pretty easily so I get my color evened out that way. I love it.

Now, if it could only do something about those under-eye circles.

the only makeup i wear is a thick coat of super red lipstick. i think it makes me look sexy… you know, like ronald mcdonald or something.

It makes you look super foxy.

I sure hope Ronald gets a new job soon. But until he changes that look, he’s gonns keep getting pigeonholed.

    makeup

My girlfriend’s grandmother once said to her:

“You look so pretty when you wear makeup.”

“But Grandma, I’m not wearing makeup.”

    “Exactly” said Grandma.

I’ve always liked girls who wear little or no makeup. Not that I’m against it or anything; it’s just that I don’t think it adds much to their appearance.

It can do subtle things, but the keyword there is subtle, I think.

    From Eme

Most of my friends don’t wear foundation on a daily basis. I never do. I do, however, use an eyebrow pencil, mascara, and lipstick. I disagree about all mascara being the same. A lot of it is too thick and gunky. I used a Shiseido eyebrow pencil that is very close to my natural brow color. Otherwise it looks fake but I think good eyebrows shape the face. In fact, I once had a conversation with a make-up artist who told me that the best way to disguise someone is to change the shape of their brows.

    mother’s mystique

Oh, my dear, how I snowed you. I only wear makeup on special occasions, but I have to admit, my eyes do look a lot better when I do, especially with glasses, since my vision tends to make my eyes look smaller. And as I get older if I can find time, I’ll try to war at least mascara and eyeliner. However sleep is to important to add that to my repertoire on a daily basis. I recently went through a bout of adult onset acne, brought about by my increased exercise. Had to go from dry skin formula to combination (oily-normal) Bio-therm. Go figure. You are never to old to get a zit. Love, Mom
