A lesson one learns in life is to never settle for less than one deserves. To not settle for less than exactly what you know you want. This rule applies in relationships, for instance. I am never “settling” again (I have before). The man I am with now continues to make my heart flutter every time I see him, going on six months now! 😀
Anyway, this rule also applies when it comes to apartment hunting. Especially when one is not desperate and hasn’t even given notice yet…
Today my roommate and I finally got to look at the actual apartment we thought we would be moving into. It was…okay. Very unlike the cute, bright apartment next door that we had lobbied for. Northern exposure means little sunshine. No ceiling fans, as the place next door had. Charmless, cavelike living room with no built-in cabinets or nice molding. As the place next door had. The apartment wasn’t even cable tv-ready. Etc.
So we left and discussed. No storage space. No laundry. We finally realized that we can indeed do better. The least we can do is find something with southern-exposed windows, right? We finally decided to back out. The vibe had gone sour. We’re in no rush at all, we can continue to look and be choosy. And this just wasn’t the apartment we were originally shown ten days ago.
I was so excited! Laying out floor plans and planning for a summer in Dolores Park. But I would have hated it a couple months later, realizing that we had settled. My roommate and I are both thirty years old, we want a nice place to live, now that we are lucky enough to be able to afford it.

Yeah for heart fluttering and holding out for the best apartment – you deserve both!
