quote of the day, month, year

November 5, 2003 by Jane

“Trying to eliminate Saddam … would have incurred incalculable human and political costs. Apprehending him was probably impossible … We would have been forced to occupy Baghdad and, in effect, rule Iraq …there was no viable ‘exit strategy’ we could see, violating another of our principles. Furthermore, we had been self-consciously trying to set a pattern for handling aggression in the post-Cold War world. Going in and occupying Iraq, thus unilaterally exceeding the United Nations’ mandate, would have destroyed the precedent of international response to aggression that we hoped to establish. Had we gone the invasion route, the United States could conceivably still be an occupying power in a bitterly hostile land.”

— George H. W. Bush, from his 1997 memoirs

I realized this morning like a wee lightbulb flickering above my head who these people are who voted for Gavin Newsom. They all work in my building, for my company. They live in the Marina, Pacific Heights, Cow Hollow, Telegraph Hill. They have straight, blonde hair. They wear comical, cropped, corduroy pants with leather spike-heeled boots. Their shoes always have a pointy toe. The conversations they conduct in the elevator are always hilariously inane (“Sooooo we are going to talk to this TUSCANY travel agent… mmmhmm, how fun, I know!! Might check that out, ooh I just can’t WAIT.”), and they often sport garish diamond rings on their left hands. They just loooooooove waxy-haired Gavin. Yes, my company employs 75% ex-sorority sisters.

ANYWAY. I promise to be active in the Gonzalez runoff campaign. He’ll never have the three million dollars his opponent has (Matt is a tenant, Gavin is a landlord), but he will have people, and hopefully that will be enough.

Ok I promise to stop posting about my local mayoral election; I know it must be boring for a lot of you.

Last night I folded my sweaters and stacked them neatly in two shelves of my new bookshelf. I find that when they are stuffed into my dresser drawers, they are out of sight, out of mind. I forget I even have them. It’s hard to dress myself!

See? That was way more interesting than politics! I should eat lunch.

Hall no dawg. I wanna hear how this turns out, G. 😉

Politics are exciting no matter what level they are on. And good luck!

the overpopulation of girls/people like that is a big part of why I don’t live in the Bay Area. One thing I like about WI is that the status quo cares about sports, burgers, beer, and snowmobiles. It’s much easier for me to deal with.
