Last night I went to my second mayoral campaign event — Gonzalez was speaking at the Women’s Building in the Mission. I got there around quarter to seven and sat in the second row to ensure that I could see. The place was almost already full, and as the speakers began, the hall was soon standing room only.
Some of the other speakers included the president of the restaurant and hotel workers labor union, a woman who has been a longtime leader in the Mission Latino community, and Peter Camejo, who ran for governor as a Green in the last two elections here in California. I actually voted for him in 2002 because I couldn’t stomach a vote for Davis — my first “protest” vote. It was exciting to see him speak. He has many intelligent ideas.
Matt showed up and he is a rock star. Everyone was cheering and on their feet. His voice is giving out a bit, but he gave a good speech and as usual made all kinds of sense. This election is really, really important. If (when) Matt is elected, it will show people that you don’t HAVE to always choose between Democrat and Republican. When Matt has a successful administration in this city, people will see that a leader from a third party actually can do it better, without being completely bought and paid for by millionaires. It’s exciting.
I’m still frustrated and angered by the media bias I am seeing toward Newsom. I guess I shouldn’t expect much else, this is America after all. You have to go to other countries to get fair political reporting.
Anyway, it really seems like the momentum has swung in Matt’s favor. I see window signs for him everywhere I go. Today when I was going to Safeway to buy my fastpass, some guys on the loading dock saw my button and shouted “MATT GONZALEZ!” That was cool.
Last night I was disgusted to find out that the chairman of the company I work for has made a massive donation to Newsom. Ugh. Typical, typical, zillionaire. At least I know I won’t work here forever…
Of the ten thousand millionaires in this city, all but TWO have given money to Newsom. That says a lot about who that candidate is for. And bless those two millionaires who hung on to decency and goodwill toward workers, and supported Matt.
I wish it had come out better, ah well. Thumbs up!
