pretty!

December 28, 2003 by Jane

So, I hadn’t seen snow up close in about ten years. This compelled me to take pictures of it once it had landed on the ground, trees, every outdoor surface.

I also made a point to stomp around in it, feel its crunch under my boots, listen to the sound it made. Threw snowballs at Brian. We made a dwarfish snowman together. A squirrel later ate its eyes. Oh well.

I loved feeling the snow fall on my face and hair. But yes, east coasters and midwest dwellers, I can see how after about a month of it, the novelty would wear right off. Yet, imagine if you were without it — completely — for a whole decade. Would it be nice to step in it again, or even just look out the window and watch it accumulate, making the whole world smooth and soft, catching all sound, throwing a cold white hush over the land?

I have to say something, since I’m a New Englander and have been since I was born. I LOVE SNOW. I will never, ever tire of it. I say, bring it on, bring it often, measure it in feet. A New England landscape blanketed in white is one of the most singularly beautiful things on Earth. Granted, there are many folks up around here who will grumble at excessive snowfalls (like last winter, for instance), and it can become inconvenient, but that is a tradeoff I will take any day of the week.

10 years without snow? I couldn’t do it.

    snow lover here

another sucker for snow here. The cold, I get right tired of. But I love snow. Nothing better than the fresh fallen stuff. I didn’t realize it when I was living in Vancouver, but I did miss it (only for two years – and I didn’t have to go far to get a fix).

Nice pictures! I especially like the icicles.

    Snow me

I feel this way every single time I see snowfall. It is glorious and liberating. In NC, we got 10 snows a year – only a few with accumulation – so it never lost its charm. Here, where the sirens and crazies are just outside my door every night, I’d give anything for the tranquility and isolation of a good blizzard right now.

Thanks for sharing the beautiful pics 🙂

Nah. Hate the snow. Hate hate hate. It’s pretty for five minutes and then makes me realize whoever wrote the let’s-describe-Hell sections of the Bible musta took the wrong drugs, ’cause Hell taint no fiery place, it is nothing but a big snowdrift and inescapable cold with pale blue-white souls stumbling zombie-like around the landscape singing “Winter Wonderland” in endless and very bad harmony, wielding snow shovels like icons of false deities. And Satan sits by the only fireplace with the only cup of hot cocoa in all Hell and looks out the window and laughs and laughs and laughs.

Snow good. It snowed in Chic on Christmas and I missed it because I was in crummy San Antonio.

I like those pictures a lot.

Southeastern wisconsin is one of the only spots in the midwest with NO snow right now. It was 50 degrees yesterday! My lawn is still green. We’re gonna be paying for this weather in march. Northern Wisconsin had solid frozen lakes that we ran around on and a decent amount of snow, I’ll post pictures from our Christmas trip soon. Sorry I didn’t get to see you, but I’m sure you can understand why by the looks of that road in your photo.

I love the snow and so do our dogs and watching our dogs frolic in the snow is one of the most excellent things in life. They get the greatest looks on their faces when they dash outside and are like, WOOOOO!!! IT SNOWED!!! FROLIC TIME!!!
