week eight

December 3, 2003 by Jane

Time for another Accutane update! Hooray, I am at the halfway point, two months left.

Skin: still somewhat dry, but I moisturize a few times a day, and put lotion on my arms and legs after showering. Upper arms developed a few small red itchy bumps, I presume due to dryness and due to the medicine clearing out pores. My lips continue to be dry and chapped, but I have it under control with Aquaphor.

Acne: face is very clear, still not “perfect,” but I don’t expect to ever have an ivory complexion and invisible pores. I am just happy to have no zits, no oil, and smooth skin for once. My skin hasn’t been this good since I was twelve. Last week I had an isolated breakout of cysts on my right jaw — about eight of them all clustered together, and painful. They cleared up quickly, but faint marks are still there. Should be totally gone in a week or two.

Other: I’m wearing my glasses a lot more, to deal with the dry eyes. Otherwise not really experiencing things like bloody nose or flaking skin. I drink lots of water, still, and I take a Vitamin E capsule daily to help with skin healing. My hair is still staying clean and soft for many days at a time, which is great since I have a lot of hair and it’s a bitch to shampoo it.

In the next two months, I don’t expect my condition to change much, apart from more clearing and evening of my face. But I will still post an update in a couple weeks. Bet ya can’t wait!

Thank you! I am getting used to wearing them almost daily, especially at work where I stare at a screen all day.

Argh. The hair may be the thing that pushes me over the edge and into my dermatologist’s office.

Thanks for the update! I’d been wondering how it was going.

What kind of acne do you have? Is your skin very oily?

I had very, very oily skin and perpetual zits, but I was never a “pizzaface,” as they so delicately say. But the bacteria and blockages in my pores causing rough skin and so on was enough to get me on Accutane.

Sounds exactly like my skin. Tons of blockages in the T-zone that I can never get rid of. None of the big red “pizzaface” patches of acne but almost always a zit or two somewhere—and my neck and back and chest all get into the act, it’s not just the face. I can wash my face and three hours later feel greasy. Going 24 hours between shampoos is about the most I can get away with, and you can imagine what that does to my ends…

I’ma stop complaining now. But it’s maddening.
