humor in bad behavior

January 21, 2004 by Jane

We went to training last night. I was so happy to finally be at class and to not be experiencing stupid hip/knee soreness.

Because of the slowness and infrequency of SF Muni, we were a half hour late to the first class, but managed to jump in to practice sword technique with the wooden bokken.

There’s this really spazzy guy in class who always dresses in street clothes (everyone else wears a black gi or other loose workout clothing), and he doesn’t seem to follow or understand anything that is going on in training, rather, he flails around in his own world. It’s kind of annoying. Also he reeks of cigarettes. This was the guy who was inappropriately flirting with me in class a couple months ago. He’s so clueless that he has kind of managed to become a bit of a pariah.

It would help if he learned anything from training, but he doesn’t “get it.” It’s weird. His motivation for being there is unsettlingly unclear. Anyway. Yeah. I usually sympathize with people who don’t fit in — I was there many times in my life — but this isn’t a social club or the gym, it’s martial arts training, so take it seriously, dude.

ANYHOO, training was good. I worked with three different partners, none of whom were Brian. We train together a lot, but some nights not at all, so we don’t fall into a rut. In the last part of class I worked on disarming drills with this guy who is very tall and looks like Keanu Reeves. He’s really good and also patient with me, a simple white belt 🙂 It’s very challenging to train with someone a foot taller than me.

At my dermatologist’s office on Monday, I had to sit in the waiting room for an hour. This chick next to me made a bunch of calls on her cellphone which we all got to listen in on. My ears perked up when she said “I found a new dojo,” thinking maybe she wasn’t the completely lame Marina bitch she was coming off as. But then she said that her new “dojo” had yoga, pilates, and kickboxing. Eyeroll!

Then the lady next to me opened up this carton of hot takeout food and loudly began to eat. Sometimes people are so rude it makes me laugh. Life is comical. Fools are funny.

You’ll do fine. Japanese sentence structure, verb conjugation, etc is much easier than most languages. The difficult part is that along the way you have to learn 3 new alphabets AND vocabulary.

Fortunately you have me and several other people to practice with. GAMBATTE!
