my leg

February 17, 2004 by Jane

The unknown pain in my left hip socket is back. It is actually aggravated and made worse by movement, so I am prevented from training, exercising, or doing yoga. This is all so frustrating I don’t even know what to do. Also my fucking healthcare clinic never answers the phone nor do they return messages, so I will take my business elsewhere. Also my cold won’t go away. Also there is a big storm outside. I just want to feel healthy for the first time in what… five months?

Joint pain is a known side effect of Accutane, as mega doses of Vitamin A are known to be bad for joints. Great. Another fucking health problem I can trade for my now-clear skin. Ugh.

Or maybe it’s that my legs are too short for most chairs and the non-ergonomic stress of feet never being flat on the floor is finally taking its toll.

I don’t know the first thing about what is wrong with my hip or what I can do about it. I just know it hurts, almost every day. It’s a dull and whispery ache, but it’s there, and it gets worse with activity, so it’s not like I just need to stretch more. Do I need physical therapy? Surgery? Special pills? God, I’m barely 31. What the hell. It just makes me really mad.

So I guess I am having a crappy day. I was really wanting to train tonight. But when I go to training with a sore hip it only means I will have to sit out for the last hour because I can barely stand.

I want to be able to run again. I want to be able to train when we go to Japan in six weeks. I want to feel strong and healthy. I take care of myself. But I feel like a cripple.

I had a nagging wouldn’t-go-away pain in my lower back last Spring and I finally just went to the doctor and asked her to fix it. Fixing it involved around the clock doses of Ibuprofen, vicodin ~1x/day and a really strong muscle relaxer every evening before bed. While at first I argued against taking so much medicine, I was talked into trying it for two weeks to see what happened.

I didn’t think the medication would help much because the pain didn’t feel like it was muscular, it felt like it was up against my bone; however, after 2 weeks of taking the medicine the pain was gone. The doctor explained that when the pain is constant, the muscles around the muscle that hurts are constantly contracted in pain – by relaxing the muscles completely at night and then preventing both dull and sharp pain (Ibuprofen and vicodin, respectively) from constricting them during the day I was giving the muscle I injured (who knows how) a chance to heal.

Granted, I felt permanently high for 2 weeks but it was worth it: the pain disappeared and hasn’t returned.

    chronic pain

as someone who has had very painful, chronic shoulder, arm and lower-back ache for the past six years… my advice to you is BE YOUR OWN ADVOCATE! be very persistant in demanding that whoever is assessing your problem either figure it out or point you in the direction of someone who can. and don’t listen to anyone who says “oh, i don’t believe in that kind of medicine” because at some point, if conventional shit isn’t working, you may want to try chiropractic or accupuncture or whatever. physical therapy helped me, but so did chiropractic treatment. i still have pain sometimes but not nearly as bad. as you know, i switched from sitting on a chair all day to sitting on a yoga ball. it’s freaky that something that i thought was maybe a small factor, turned out to make such a huge difference. so i think there could be other small things having big effects that i don’t know about. consider everything, ask a lot of questions, educate yourself and MAKE the doctors help you. rawr!

i had chronic hip pain for about 6 months. i went to the doctor, they put me on Celebrex (which is for arthritis, btw) which helped…but pain came back when i went off it. finally i found that walking a lot helped, and stretching, and now it’s gone. Just thought I’d share!

      Re: me too

Thanks! I am going to my doctor on Monday and see what she says, and I’ve already had friends recommend accupuncturists to me… we’ll see!
