Now we man the mizzenmast!

This morning is mostly overcast. The cloud cover is gauzy, and the sun looks like a flat white disc.

I left my house around 8:20 and decided to walk halfway to work. I walked on the train tracks in the twisty part for the first time, since I knew that the next J wouldn’t come through for another five minutes and I could make it.

I got to the park and kept walking down the hill, past the people standing around waiting on the J. Then I got a cup of coffee on Church Street and walked up to Duboce to wait on the N Judah. The whole journey took twenty minutes. That doesn’t seem like enough. Maybe I’ll repeat it after work.

Yesterday Ert told me that our old Olympia friend and roommate Joshua is coming to town this week. We are going to show up at one of his events and surprise him.

I haven’t seen Josh in almost ten years. He was my roommate when I got my very first apartment. I still don’t know how we did it considering neither of us had jobs, haha. Being a “student” helps, not to mention the fact that our total rent was something like $400 for a 2-bedroom apartment.

Josh was so rad. But at the time he seemed kind of directionless. He made zines and was in bands and was very funny and talented, but had no urge to get a job, understandably. It’s easy enough to live cheap in Oly, anyway. I always sort of wondered what he would do, and couldn’t imagine him settling down with a desk job, like I did.

So today looking at his site (I was shocked that he even had a website), I find out that he has taken one of his loves and talents — food — and turned it into his career. He is a personal chef, caterer, and food writer. Small scale, yes, but it looks like he has really found his calling and is making something of it. And I am super proud and happy for him. Can’t wait to see him!

I hope someday I can take one of my loves and turn it into a career.
