exciting muscular events

April 28, 2004 by Jane

Ok so the reason I haven’t been updating as much is that I’ve been dealing with all the stupid sitting issues and thus have been avoiding my computer a lot more than usual lately. I KNOW!! Crazy!

But I seem to always have things in my head or experiences I want to talk about in here and then I don’t, so I am going to make an effort to update DAILY from now on. Aw yeah.

We are just coming down from a heat wave here. Just a small one, three days long. Windows open, only two mosquito bites for me. Brian killed one of those bloodsucking bitches for me last week, I was filled with pride. I think this might be one of those instinctive responses but watching him save me from a mosquito made me feel all protected or something. Not that I haven’t killed hundreds of those insects me own self and been pretty damn proud of myself for it.

I also love watching him grill up some meat for us on the barbeque. MY MAN MAKE FIRE! COOK HUNT FOOD ON FIRE FOR WOMAN! Hi.

Anyway.

My cutehead monkey cat Sasha turned two years old on Monday. He is the cutest ever. I think I am either remarkably fortunate with my cat selection, or I just have a special magical connection with cats that makes them totally awesome. One of those.

Still going to physical therapy twice a week and working on core strength and flexibility. Still in pain a lot of the day. Man, does anyone else have this problem or was I just incredibly out of shape in the midsection? And by out of shape I mean weak and unsound. The areas I am working on are my hamstrings, hip flexors, quads, and abs. All abdominal muscles, not just the most external ones. Did you know there are actually three layers of ab muscle, and the deepest one is the “core” and should be developed the most? Hai. I do 200 crunches a day. And I am thinking of joining a gym YET AGAIN.

Sitting on an exercise ball is fun and bouncy. And comfy.

This morning I started thinking about getting ready to move. I am so excited. One thing I really want to do in May is gather up all my crap that I do not use and do not need and give it away. Mainly clothing, but other things too. Brian has so much less stuff than me. He could move all of his belongings in one small U-Haul.

Both of my baseball teams are SUCKING. I think I feel this more because for the past two or three years we have been spoiled by two excellent winning ballclubs, and now they both stink for various reasons. Doesn’t mean I will stop being a fan of course. I am going to two games next week. I likea the baseball.

I am almost sure that I want my bridal bouquet to be made of orange tulips, orange mini callas, and minimal greens/filler. Yes I realize my wedding is just under a year away, but hey. I know what I like.

also: heat sucks! i live here for the mild weather, not for the crazy ass; sweat in weird places weather we’ve been having.

Yeah, I’m glad the heat is gone, but it’s supposed to come back this weekend. Pfft.

I’m going to the game on Sunday, I still love the Giants. In fact their losing ways are taking me back the old (and new I guess) Mariners of yore. Heh.

Your fantasy league team, after a strong start, is now in the shitter. The perils of picking guys from your favorite team.

Jane: I forgot to tell you about the article I read regarding core and hip problems. I can’t remember where exactly I read it but I think it was in Yoga Journal.

Anyhoo, yes, a lot of people have weak abdominal and back muscles precisely because we in the West sit in chairs all day and sleep in high beds. The author made an observation that people in the East spend most of their days sitting on the floor. They also squat more. And you’ll notice that even very old people are able to get into these positions that our old people find impossible to get into or out of.

The reason is that we are not used to supporting our own abs–chairs do that for us. Hence a lot of people have very weak backs.

I’ve noticed that some people throw their backs when they do everyday twisting movements. Such as turning to the side to get something. That’s bc we tend to focus on abdominal exercises that are front to back. I’d be interested in knowing if your therapist has found the same thing.

Another good core strengthener is the plank.

Sooo true!! In Japan, they do have western style seating in many places, but also they have plenty of floor seating. Most people sit COMFORTABLY on their heels. Of course I find that position to be hell on my thighs. A goal of mine is to be able to sit Japanese style comfortably.

I really want to get a nice sofa when we move, but imagine the money we would save if I just got a low table and about ten floor pillows… ooooh.

So your therapist has determined that your problems stem from weak muscles and not from damage? That’s very encouraging!

No, I do have an injury, but if I strengthen my core, it won’t happen again.

OH, I forgot one last thing. The article also pointed out that a lot of us in the West also suffer from tight hips because of all that chair sitting.
