marathon training

September 22, 2004 by Jane

Ok that’s not true, I have no intention of running a marathon, ever. But I was trying to think of something to describe how serious I need to get with regard to my daily physical training and recovery.

Super serious.

I did yoga this morning and it was great. But 25 minutes is not long enough. An hour of yoga is perfect. Which means I should be getting up around when Brian does and do it then, while half-asleep. Yoga is best in the A.M.

I need to work hard to make my pain go away. Every single day. I need to lessen irritants to my back. So I am dropping the Japanese class, which is extremely painful on my back every Thursday night. Thanks City College for buying the worst desks ever created. Plus we are now very behind due to missing a really important day of class last week. And frankly I am not motivated this term to study Japanese, I am motivated to go to the gym and get the most out of my membership so that I can heal my poor disc.

So yeah. What I need is a schedule, rather than a sort of “oh, I hope I get to the gym this week” type of attitude. I need to create and set and write down the schedule.

Something like:

Monday: After work do an hour of cardio (elliptical or swimming) then take Pilates at 6:30. OR take yoga at 5:30 and then Step Basic at 6:30
Tuesday: Yoga in the morning for one hour at home
Wednesday: After work do an hour of cardio then take Pilates at 6:30
Thursday: Go to the gym before work and do weight training circuit
Friday: Yoga in the morning for one hour at home
Saturday: Long walk (one hour)
Sunday: zzzzzzz

That’s eight hours a week, and eminently reasonable, right? And I have willed myself to go to the gym every day before, so I know I can do it. I just need to keep reminding myself why I need to do it: to heal my back, to become strong and healthy, and let’s face it, I want awesome arms and legs.

Think of it this way: If I have an appointment with my physical therapist, I keep it, and I try not to be late, because I don’t want to let him down, I made a promise to be there, and it’s for my own good. I just need to apply that thinking to the appointments I make for myself, too. I mean, I think that’s one reason people succeed with personal trainers — if you flake on your appointment or are late, you are letting someone other than yourself down.

Another reason why it’s fun to go to the gym with my futurehusband.

Yes I left my gym clothes at home today. I have an appointment this afternoon with the spine specialist. Tomorrow’s Thursday, so I will get to the gym by 8am. Yeah!! WOOOOO!!

Congrats on your plan to take charge of your fitness. I’m trying to do the same thing, myself. I hope it goes perfectly for you.

Thank you! Once I get into it and stick to it for a week or two, it should be no problem. It’s just getting started that’s tough!
