mmmm candy

October 28, 2004 by Jane

Well, the Season of Candy is upon us, which made me think about how some American candy is good, and a lot of it is crap. I think I have turned into a chocolate snob. Real, true dark chocolate is amazing, and is even good for the heart in small “doses.” Most mass-produced American chocolate is, however, made up most of milk, sugar, and oil, with relatively little real pure cocoa. And don’t even get me started on “white” chocolate.

So I decided hey, it’s a slow work day, why not make a stupid poll? HOW FUN!

I know, it’s hard to pick just one. And LJ doesn’t let you vote twice. Jerks! My personal favorites are Reeses cups and Junior Mints. And I can’t stand the yucky oversweetened non-chocolate taste of both Kit Kat and Nestle “we sell shitty formula to third world women” Crunch bars.

Ah chocolate. Another way in which living in SF has totally spoiled me.

Woohoo, first to vote! Do people really eat 3 Musketeers? Another barftastic selection could have been Charleston Chew. What the hell is that thing?

I love reeses cups!! I like the little ones which you can’t get here. But I am cutting out sugar so candy bars are out out out 🙁

The kit kats here have really gone insane there are:

    Normal KK
    KK Kubes
    KK orange kubes
    KK cappucino kubes
    KK Chunky
    KK Lemon & Yoghurt
    KK Luscious Lime
    KK Editions caramel
    KK Editions seville orange,
KK blood Orange (spooky for halloween)
    Orange KK (normal)
    Mint KK
    Dark choc KK
    White choc KK
    Lemon Cheesacke KK
    Pineapple KK
    Banana KK
    Vanilla KK
    Strawberry KK
    KK Balls
    Triple choc KK
    Melon KK

    And!
    Christmas Pudding Kit Kat.

Also, there is this one bar here that is way worse than Nestle Crunch (which I happen to like). Its called “aero” and its just a chocolate bar with PUFFS OF AIR in it. Its like a nestle crunch with all the krispies magically zapped out of it. Whats the point in that?

I just think Crunch bars taste more like buttered rice crispies… they should do a “dark” version.

“Lemon & Yoghurt” Kit Kat? OMG that is fucked up. 🙂

Yeah we are having our big stupid office party today and I am proud to say that so far I have had one mini snickers and will hopefully leave it at that.

One of the few things I really miss about England: the candy.
I love and miss Toffee Crisp bars. Especially the orange flavor. I have been contemplating a trip to London with an empty suitcase, and filling it up with things I can’t get here. I will post a journal entry about it, I’m so keen on the idea…

Well maybe I can make up a care package… or maybe we can have do some kind of food swap package, although I’ve been here so long there isn’t much food from the US that I still miss.

oo I’ve had Aero! I think its a european thing as I got it from a co-worker who brought it back from her trip. Its very…weird, for lack of a better term. You feel as if you’re being gyped! Air, the way to make less chocolate and sell it for more money.

OMG that just reminded me of your journey to chocolate town. Man.

BTW I totally have the WS win on TiVo for you, if you’re of a mind…

Once in a while, I will find “zero” or “milk shake” bars. Does anyone remember remember them? And what about “look”. That was dark chocolate. And up by the counter, in a bowl, “Ice Cubes!”..That’s good eating. Your right though, darker chocolate is better.

I have a problem with chocolate…I eat too much of it! I have a thing for Almond Joys right now, but my all time favorites are probably milky way, reeses, and 3 musketeers. If I had to pick one based on quality, it would be the milky way bar 1.0. The original ones didn’t have so much damn caramel and were yummier that way! However, far and above these chocolates sits the high and mighty cadbury egg!!! Original, version 1.0 where the cream wasn’t as thick and it was kinda “juicy” hehe. Yeah, those were the BEST!

By far, the worst consistency chocolate is definitely Hershey’s. Its like eating congealed plastic. Once you have european, ghiradelli, and godiva chocolate, there’s no going back. I’m a sucker for godiva. I got like 3 boxes of it for Christmas last year, yum!

On a side note, everyone should search google for nostalgic candies and things you can’t get here. There are a lot of candy websites where you can buy the good stuff! For example:

    http://www.candywarehouse.com
    http://www.blaircandy.com
    http://www.oldtimecandy.com
    http://www.hometownfavorites.com

But what about Skor bars… those are American, aren’t they?

I’m a chocolate snob. I think the only stuff I eat that you can get at the corner store or places like that are toblerones and Lindt – which are Swiss.

And I really love Bernard Callebaut chocolate.

I figure that if I’m going to eat it – it should be real chocolate, not the waxy, sugary crap in the candy aisle.

Those little Lindt truffle balls are fantastic. I like Reese’s but the Lindt with peanut butter puts them to SHAME.
