foiled

November 23, 2004 by Jane

I left the house around 7:45 this morning, which is much earlier than usual for me. The plan was to either go swimming right away, or do 20 minutes of work and then go swimming.

But after 15 minutes on the N train, I found myself stuck at Church street, right at the mouth of the Market Street subway. “There’s a delay at Embarcadero…” the driver was saying. Embarcadero is the last stop at the other end of the long subway. And it was backed up to the surface.

I waited a little while for it to clear. Then the driver came back on the PA, saying that they were putting up cones in front of the train (?), so passengers should try to head over to Market Street one block south and try to take the incredibly slow F-Market, which holds half the capacity of a two-car N.

Sure enough, everyone flooded from the stalled train and began heading in a mass toward Market, where I imagined the streetcar stop islands were alreadly overflowing.

But I didn’t go south. I headed three blocks north, along with a dozen or so other clever communters, and hopped on a half-empty 71 bus, which carried us downtown without further delay. It still took me over an hour to get to work, but I would rather walk than be stuck on a completely packed 50-year-old streetcar trudging down Market Street at 2 miles an hour.

As you can imagine, I didn’t get to the pool. I have a lunch date this afternoon, so who knows, maybe I can go around 3pm now that all of my work for the rest of the week has been taken care of.

Crankypants co-worker keeps making this joke about how he is making “goose and cranberry” for Thanksgiving; “bottle of Grey Goose and a bottle of cranberry juice.” Haha real funny dude. Drinking alone on the holidays is hilarious!

I hit that stall as well, and just walked to work. there is nothing worse then crowded buses/trains. you have no control and people lean on you and cough on you and just stare straight ahead. awful. walking was nice. im gonna take it up again. kinda slacked off post-trip.

I would seriously love to walk to work! Pity it would take me almost 3 hours 🙁

But I should try it sometime, maybe cheat a little by taking the N from Cole to Noe through the small tunnel, but walk for the rest of it. That might get it down to two hours.

I adore posts like this of yours, ’cause it allows me to visualize the city that I miss…Nate and I were talking at the bar last night about how we’re gonna live in Sunset (after he sells a couple of songs to Norah Jones, of course – Nate and I always start having moving-to-CA fantasy conversations once it gets cold here).
