odd and sad

January 5, 2005 by Jane

This morning an email came to my inbox from Kavita Makhijani. I recognized the name right away — I think she was the only Indian girl at my high school, and we had classes together as we were in the same year. I recall her being a school friend of mine, though I can’t place her face very well.

So I opened the email and quickly saw that it was not from Kavita, but from her husband. Mourning her. And telling the people he found in her email address book about her. The email didn’t provide any information about how or when she died. But it seemed quite tragic, whatever happened.

But the strangest thing is, I haven’t spoken to or thought about Kavita since high school. We weren’t close by any means; she was a classmate. So why was I on this email list? I realized later that she must have picked addresses off of our alumni page at classmates.com or something. And for some reason had saved my name, yet never written to me.

Finally today during lunch I googled around and found this story. She grew up to be a minorly successful journalist and freelance writer. She was married in July. She and her unborn baby died in September of undisclosed pregnancy-related causes.

I’m sorry Kavita. You were always a very nice girl, and I remembered you.
