Because our apartment has an infestation of tiny annoying harmless black flies. They don’t care about flypaper, either. They breed in the soil of my house plants.
The only way to get rid of them is to remove an inch of topsoil from my plant pots, and replace that with a layer of sterile sand. Removing the soil gets rid of any eggs there, and the flies dislike breeding in sand. And that is why we went to the beach on Sunday! Yr welcome.
The sand has to be boiled because it came from the beach and was probably crawling with little sea bacterias and whatnot.
I came across your LJ, through Bjornio (who never makes an entry-darn it)..but the sand bit is really GOOD to know. I have been going nuts trying to find out why we are getting these same stupid little buggies in the house. I think you can also buy sand at Home Depot, if you don’t feel like boiling it, or have a beach nearby. I’m gonna do it too. Thanks for the tip!
Boiled Sand
Either you got new fishies and wanted to sterilize the sand, or you mistook it for salt to boil pasta or taters.
Am I right? 🙂
Ok, I’ll bite, how come?

You know, I could have sworn, the first time I read this, that the word “peanut” appeared somewhere in this post.

You ate sand?
We ate sand.
Should added onions to that soup. Always makes it better. Garlic, too.
