Why we are leaving California, in a nutshell. The other reason is that this state has one of the worst school systems in the country, and our governor was the star of “Jingle all the Way.”
I finished the “Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle” book and learned a LOT. I would actually recommend this book to anyone who wants to lose fat, and is willing to WORK HARD. It’s not just for bodybuilders. It’s inspiring, educational, and best of all, the author backs up his statements with evidence whenever needed. There’s lots of scientific and chemical information about proteins and cell composition, but I liked that stuff. And at the end, the appendix gives lots of sample menus and workout suggestions. THANK YOU SHANNON!
(Yes the website is a bit cheesy and ugly and full of !!!s, but that should not deter you — believe me, I read the book start to finish.)
I’m on day five of the “plan” and I already feel so much healthier. I went over to fitday and entered in what I was eating only last week, when I kept my “food diary” and no surprise, I was eating more calories than I was burning, and I was also eating more fat than protein. Duh. No wonder I didn’t lose a single pound.
We are having a nice morning drinking coffee and listening to NPR and reading. Pretty soon we’ll go to the beach. It’s another sunny, mild day in SF.
Which state are you moving to? You know, Missouri could always use more blue votes. And our housing is super cheap.
We’ll be one state above you, in Chicago. We have pals there, a good friend in Milwaukee, and Brian’s entire family is in Michigan. MIDWESTERN HOE-DOWN!!
psssst… Iowa is one state above me. Illinois is to the East.
You know, because I’ve become accustomed to the notion of outlandish CA real estate, this is the phrase that jumped out at me in the article:
“But the median price in a lot of metro areas is close to $300,000…”
It’s a depressing thought. With real estate jumping through the recent recession, the quality of lifestyle really has slipped. $300K might not seem too much from a California perspective, but out here for those of us in the middle of the middle class, it means either spending a lot more on real estate than is conventionally prudent or making some grim compromises in the real estate you eventually purchase.
[curling up into ball]
But! Thanks for the perspective. Could be much worse, obviously.
Definitely could be worse. The STARTING price for a livable house in the Bay Area is a paltry $600k. The median is around a million. Fuck that shit. This place is not all that.
So yeah, the $300k price tag still seems like a lot, but doesn’t seem totally absurd. And I know there is a lot of stuff in Chicago for under $300k.
