Last night we went out to a bar in North Beach. I got to wear my new wool cardigan and it is totally awesome. It was actually funny that I even bought that thing because I have always hated how long, belted cardigans look on my body, but this one actually fit me just right. Don’t let the model in the photo fool you; she hasn’t eaten a meal in four days and can’t help but make it look baggy.
So we’re at this club, celebrating Heidi’s birthday and hanging out with all the urban hipstas. I had a cosmo and went out on the dance floor. Brian isn’t into that scene (nor am I, but it’s fun to pretend I am for an hour or so), so he obligingly held my sweater and my clutch til I got back. He’s a doll. I do love going out every once in awhile though. I’ve never really liked big loud parties, or drinking, but I can take small doses just to feel mildly social.
I miss baseball, so today while I was cleaning up the house, I pulled up game 2 of the ALDS on Tivo and relived again the moment Boston’s Graffanino let the ball hop through his legs, and Tadahito’s 3-run home run two batters later. I let the whole game play as I changed the sheets, swept the floors, watered the plants, and washed the dishes.
The landlady was as usual playing her music at annoyingly loud volume upstairs, so I escaped around 3:30 and headed over to the Fillmore and Japantown. I went into the Kiehl’s store (mmm) and got some Blue Herbal Moisturizer samples and some tea tree shampoo. Then wandered down to Peet’s for a latte.
I stepped into the Shabby Chic store just so that I could stand there and miss when it used to be called Fillamento and used to be wonderful. Sigh.
As I continued down the hill to Japantown, I noticed something odd on the corner. Three guys in suits and sunglasses loitered outside of Design Within Reach. They were next to a sleek black towncar. Hmm, okay, I figured, someone important must be nearby. I walked past the furniture store and looked inside, but didn’t see anything unusal. Kept going a few doors down, and heard some boisterous voices coming from the optometry shop ahead. Peeked in as I walked by, and there was our mayor.
Mayor Newsom was in an eyeglasses store, trying on frames, and of course, surrounded by a gaggle of giggling, fawning women. He is quite tall. This is I think my second Gavin sighting, and by far odder than the first one, when Brian and I saw him ordering a sandwich in the deli downtown where we were having lunch sometime last year.
If I was much much bolder, I would have asked him to make our city as clean as Chicago. But I am not that bold.
I went to Soko Hardware on Post and got some tabi for my husband, and could not resist some wee green leaf-shaped appetizer plates and serving plates. As the sun dropped into the west, I trudged on to catch the 22-Fillmore at Geary. A crowd was waiting, some complaining about how they had been standing there for 30 minutes already. Yes, I think I would rather have pointed this out to Mr. Mayor.
Five minutes later, a 22 came. Then another. And ANOTHER. I got on the third one. Yet another was right behind. FOUR 22 buses in a row. This is actually so typical it came as no surprise to anyone. Muni is such a fucking joke.
Anyway, much later, I got home to my clean apartment. I made Brussels sprouts for dinner, which I mention only because I can’t remember the last time I ate them, except that it left a bad impression on me. But last week Martha Stewart made some on her show, and said how good and nutritious they are, so I thought what the heck.
Martha was, of course, correct. Brussels sprouts ARE good. You just need to get fresh ones, boil in salted water for four minutes, drop them into cold water, cut them in half, then sear them in a skillet with butter, salt, and pepper. Tomorrow: baby bok choy and a chicken dish with fancy mushrooms and sliced almonds. Yum.
Brian bought himself a present today: a Palm Zire 72. I played with it a little, and it is literally a thousand times better, faster, and more powerful than the rinky dink Palm I had five years ago, which cost more than this one. I kinda want one now, but I am going to let Brian be my guinea pig and see how he likes it and if he actually keeps using it for more than a month 😉
Halloween is Monday and I realized recently that I don’t care. I am not into it this year at ALL. Not sure why. Maybe it’s the emphasis on candy? The thought of all that candy makes me feel kind of sick and kind of fat. Bleah. I’ll be a lot more interested when we have kids and can dress them in adorable little costumes.
Ok I’m gonna go watch Chappelle’s Show now. I’m rich, beeyotch!

This post makes me miss the city a lot. I liked Fillamento, too. There is a place here called Rubin’s that I will take you to when you visit again. Boys and toys – Jesse just bought a Razr phone this weekend. He kept whipping it out really obviously to check the time at the party we were at last night. hah.
Fillamento was soooo awesome. I still have a tiny but fat journal I bought there. And I got a friend a xmas gift there 5 years ago, this glass salad serving bowl that was kind of milky and iridescent. Man, they had EVERYTHING there. Now it’s just a big white room full of white furniture and white towels and white sheets. Puke.
Oooh a Razr phone! He’s like Paris Hilton now!
palm 72
re: I have the palm 31, which when I look at the palm 72 makes me wonder what the difference is? Does yours have a memory card? mom
Re: palm 72
I’m not sure. I think he did get an extra 1GB of memory that he bought separately. That way he can store some MP3s on it.
