So, the most egregious of all major entertainment awards shows is tonight: The Grammys. Now, I loves my awards shows. I love the Emmys, the Globes, the Oscars. I love the outfits, the awkward presenters, the speeches, and when someone deserving actually gets recognition. But as they are every year, the Grammys are a mockery of that. There is no-one more out of touch than the Grammy voter.
Sometimes, a movie or a tv show will be named the “best” for the year and actually deserve the acclaim. But music is so much more subjective, and there is so much MORE of it, and so much of the best music is being made outside the evil clutches of the music industry, that I can’t even think of the last time a Grammy winner has actually been deserving. The Grammys are a cavalcade of who made the most money and who kissed the most ass.
So tonight I will skip the Grammys, and fire up some Spoon or Decemberists or Death Cab for Cutie on my iPod. Or better yet, maybe I’ll have the show on mute and blast “16 Military Wives” over the shrieking of Mariah Carey.
Fifteen celebrity mimes
Leading their fifteen sordid wretched checkered lives
Will they find the solution in time
Using their fifteen pristine moderate liberal minds?
Eighteen academy chairs
Out of which only seven really even care
Doling out the garland to five
Celebrity minds, they’re humbly taken by surprise
did your birthday silliness from me arrive yet? Boo on media mail.
Yes! Didn’t you get my email thanking you?? Thank you! I sent it the day I got the book, a couple weeks ago π
i am with you on that. no one i like won a grammy. i’m trying to remember the last time i actually watched the grammy’s and was happy with any of the outcomes or live performances and really, i just can’t remember any of them. i thought that maybe this year death cab would win but nope, stuck with the white stripes, wow, how daring.
I saw Death Cab on the red carpet preshow, did they play a song? It’s still going on the west coast. I did manage to catch the Coldplay song but missed the Gorillaz π
i was running around town so i didn’t watch. it’s probably still on here in alaska too but i think i’ll read and listen to my ipod instead. i just looked at the list of winners online and was disappointed so i figured why bother. i’m hoping the oscars are more fun for me.
yes, coldplay was nice…and thats about it! π
i can never take these shows too seriously either. i mean, mariah carey is still around?! still hard to get over that our seattle’s death cab is big enough to come on any colored carpet, much less the same one that uh, the desperate housesmuts walk on? really? they did?
kind of like the shock of modest mouse playing on the o.c. π
