I never felt the cold hand of danger

March 10, 2006 by Jane

+ I went to the gym five out of six days this week. Each time I did a challenging hill climb on the elliptical machine for 35 minutes. I am now about six pounds from my goal weight, targeted for the end of the month. Yeah. We’ll see.

+ As I left the gym, I was tempted by free easter chocolates in the lobby. That’s just evil.

+ Often times as I am working out in front of a large window on the third floor of the Y, I can look out at the Bay and watch ferries and giant freighters drifting past. Occasionally SFO or OAK directs a landing pattern right over the Bay Bridge and the planes fly so low and so close that I can usually make out the airline.

+ Now that I have lost over four pounds, I thought it would be a great idea to visit Cowgirl Creamery and buy some fresh ricotta and chevre. Ah well. Mmmm.

+ This morning around 2:45 or 3am, I was roused awake (as were Brian and both cats) by a very, very loud series of noises outside that at first seemed to be thunder, but were too staccato, and with no reverb. Accompanying the sounds were bright flashes of white light, which we could see from both the front and back of the house.

We wondered if it was gunshots, but it didn’t have a “cracking” sound, and no cops ever showed up, and there was no destruction outside this morning. It seemed to be literally right over our house. Brian said it must have been firecrackers, but it made no sense for someone to be lighting off 15 M80s in a row at 3 in the morning right above our building. My final theory was some kind of electrical transformer explosion, but our power was unaffected.

So obviously: It was aliens. Shit.

Hmmm – I told the mother ship to look for me at my house.

    Sorry about that.

That’s weird. Now that you mention this, I have a vague memory of hearing that noise too. Though we were dead to the world after much wine at dinner and afterward, though, so I only slightly stirred and thought, “odd,” and went back to sleep. And we were still in total darkness due to power outage on our street after the thunderstorm earlier.

No, this was Thursday night, so night before last. There was some rain afterward. If it was thunder, it was like nothing I’ve ever heard, with no buildup and no retreat, just a dozen or so BANGS, like bombs going off in the air, and then nothing. So bizzare.

OH and the white flashes were perfectly synched up with the noise, which again discounts that it was thunder. I don’t think lightning usually strikes the same spot over and over again for twenty seconds.

Hmm, OK, so maybe my vague memory of being disturbed by similar is from Thursday? I dunno, I was groggy and 90% asleep, so what you describe is fuzzy and dreamlike and unpinpointable in my memory. But also not as right-over-the-house-ish, so maybe it was the same night.

        Either way, odd!
