you or your memory

March 6, 2007 by Jane

Going to see the Mountain Goats tomorrow night!! weeeee!!

I wonder if Kuda is going to any of the shows.

Right now I am just workin on thee book and realizing that we should probably go grocery shopping in the near future. Trader Joes, I have a love/hate relationship with you.

Today I had a regrettable lunch: terrible cafeteria pizza. I was reminded of oh how you say high school? Ew.

Ok. Now for some audience participation.

Name a movie that you OBSESSED over as a kid, watching over and over until you had practically memorized it.

I can name THREE, which range in quality from garbage to brilliance:

1. Grease 2 (my shame)
2. Little Shop of Horrors (had the soundtrack)
3. Stand By Me (hot for Keifer)

God, two of them are musicals. What does that mean? MAYBE I AM GAY

OMG my first “date” was to see Spaceballs. Unfortunately it was a traumatic experience as I spent most of the movie pushing the guy’s goddamn hand off my leg. CLASSY.

      • on March 7, 2007 at 3:42 am krabumple

        Ohm-meh-gheeee!

Firstly, a first date is NEVER a movie! EVER! But we’ll chalk that up to inexperiance, as your date was probably young. But SPACEBALLS? that’s just a bad move on his part. And Jesoo, and leg-grabbing on a first date? Ugh!

“CLASSY!” definitely covers that bomb of a date >_< I hereby apologize on behalf of the male gender!

        • on March 7, 2007 at 3:47 am janechurch

as your date was probably young

The horrible truth: I was 14, he was a SENIOR in highschool. He was my brother’s friend. Yeah, it’s gross.

So, it was more like “Sleazeballs”.

          • on March 7, 2007 at 3:59 am krabumple

            omg! omg!

Dude, that is kinda gross. On his part, 100%. Man, guys can be dumb. Me included.. I still don’t get why ‘dinner and a movie’ is such an old standard for dating, I think it’s boring. Too many distractions from what I want to know about, which would be the lady.

But you know what’s weird.. the older and better you get at dating, the more reserved you get about it.. Sunday, I had a second date with a nice young lady, and it was just me and her talking on my futon, drinking some of my home-roasted coffee (get a Chemex. Best coffee maker EVAR), and having cupcakes I made from scratch that morning. I gave her a bouquet of daisys because I like her and she had a rough week. We had a f’ing blast, and it turned out that I was the first guy who ever gave her flowers. She’s 29!!! wtf! Guys are jerks! And the date ended with a demure kiss goodbye.

point being, a date like an 8 year old would plan is not a bad idea! And even odder, she took off yesterday morning to work for a month in San Francisco. Whadda coincidence!

          • on March 7, 2007 at 4:10 am janechurch

oooh congrats on the date and that does sound nice.

Movies are good for a third date. On our third date, Brian and I went to see “Far From Heaven.” Our first date was Indian food and then hot apple cider at a cafe, and our second date was dinner and then playing pool.

          • on March 7, 2007 at 4:53 am krabumple

            Thank you!!

You know, you make a very good point there. I mean, the third date is still part of the ‘interview’ process, and a movie is a good way to see how you two handle time together, but quiet. Very crucial, if you think about it! In any case, looks to me like you had the winning trifecta of dates ^_^

Our third date, when she gets back, is over at her house, and I have been instructed that I’m cooking. I’m thinking seared scallops, can’t go wrong with those! And maybe a nice spinach/feta/tomato salad with some of that mediterranean (sp?) spice infused olive oil, with some sort of grainy side-dish. Hooj!

      imdb doesn’t know?

  3. on March 7, 2007 at 4:04 am palegreenthings

    Star Wars!

Also, Daffy Duck’s Movie: Fantastic Island.

    • on March 7, 2007 at 4:08 am janechurch

Oh yeah, Star Wars for me too, but I was only six or something? Did you know that back before videotapes, they used to sell on 8-track the full audio of that movie? So we would actually listen to the movie, all the dialogue and sound effects, etc. It was like an old-timey radio program!

And now I will get back to watching my stories as I sit in my rocking chair.

        star wars

Your and your brother had the whole Star Wars (part IV) memorized, you did the female he did the male, with sound effects and inflection. But then you had Winnie the Pooh memorized at 4. Love, Mom

    moffies

Maybe I am showing my age, but some I can think of off the top of my head:

    1. Monty Python and the Holy Grail (I swear me and my friends knew EVERY line)
    2. Room with a View (A true anglophile must also love Italy by proxy. For years I searched in vain for an orange lipstick to look like Helena Bonham Carter’s)
    3. Breakfast Club (Could you describe the ruckus, sir?)

Maybe its no wonder I ended up living in the UK?

As far as dates go, movies are a dull choice, imo. I think the date really depends on the person, and not what you are doing. If you are with a good match, then it doesn’t matter what you are doing, and also, you will usually pick things you will mutually enjoy (so if you both love movies, then im sure that would be a nice date)

For example, my perfect first date was drinks outside at a pub, followed by a long walk along the southbank. Second date was a long walk followed by a drink a pub, followed by making out. Third date was dinner followed by a long walk through the park followed by more making out… I sense a pattern here.

      Re: moffies

Hmm, who is this you were making out with? *curious*

And if I included movies I obsessed over in late teens/early 20s, I would sadly have to throw in Rocky Horror Picture Show. And Spinal Tap.

        Re: moffies

Who? Oh well, no one. er myself. Or my imaginary boyfriend….

  6. on March 7, 2007 at 5:20 pm zulkey

OMG me too with Little Shop of Horrors! OK it’s official. We’re getting stoned sometime in our lifetime and watching this together and singing along.

I made a tuna and white bean salad for lunch and brought some whole wheat matzo bread to go with it. We’ll see how this turns out.

    • on March 7, 2007 at 5:24 pm janechurch

      Sooomewheeeere that’s greeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeen!!!

That sounds really good actually. Did you know that red grapes are a good addition to tuna salad? True.

      • on March 7, 2007 at 5:25 pm zulkey

        say AH!

  7. on March 7, 2007 at 8:09 pm guineaus

    hmm….

    in no particular order:

    Spaceballs
    The Breakfast Club
    Neverending Story

  8. on March 9, 2007 at 2:18 am Anonymous

Oh thanks Jane, I found it. It’s called “The Peanut Butter Solution” and it was made in 1985. And it’s Canadian, as I suspected. And weird, from memory. Hmmm.
