Just now I decided to turn off HGTV and flip over to KUOW public radio instead. The first thing I heard was a man’s voice introducing the song he was about to sing. It only took five seconds to recognize John Darnielle once the song began. So happy. New Mountain Goats! Listen here.

Last night was the high school jazz band festival right here in little old north Kitsap. Brought back some vivid memories for me. As I have mentioned in the past, I was in the vocal jazz ensemble in high school, and we competed regionally in festivals around the Northwest just like this every year, usually […]

I finished reading two biographies of American female writers this week. One thing I found interesting was that, in a way, Julia Child and Nelle Harper Lee were living somewhat parallel lives at the time they were each working on their first (and in Lee’s case, only) book: each worked throughout the 1950s on their […]

Watch this: Frozen Grand Central Station. Pretty cool. My first time in France, in 1996, my friend and I saw some French art students doing this exact same kind of public performance art in the street. They all started walking in slow motion, then froze. Decoupage gifts from Bombus. (A shop on the Etsy site.) One of my favorites is the $1000 coffee table decoupaged in maps of London: Leonard or Liz would enjoy the superhero platter ($84): This is one craft I would seriously love to learn to do. I spent large portions of my childhood cutting pictures and […]

Thanks to living in close quarters with a sick husband, I woke up this morning with a scratchy throat and stuffed up nose. Awesome. I shall be treating this aggressively for the next five days. So much for my “vacation.” Fortunately I have plenty to do: lots of books to read, fingerless mitten to finish […]

It’s supposed to snow all day tomorrow and into Monday. More winter! Fortunately new job won’t start for another week. Today was the house inspection, meaning we (me, Brian, our agent, and the inspector) spent a couple hours in our future house going through every single room. The inspector also went on the roof (will […]
