I can’t believe I have to wait another three months for Mad Men to return.
I checked the temp on our remote digital thermometer — 66 degrees F outside. That is the warmest it has been here in six months, and that is no exaggeration.
Like someone coming out of hibernation, I left the house in a short-sleeved t-shirt and jeans for the first time in I don’t know how long. I took Kona on a nice walk, soaking up pure vitamin D the whole way. There were lots of people outdoors; to stay inside on a day like today, after this endless winter, would seem like a crime.
But now I am home again, relaxing my pregnant self, and about to make a cold soba noodle salad for tomorrow’s lunch. Tomorrow is supposed to be even warmer. Sandals?? Ooooh maybe! Shit I better paint my toenails. They’ve been colorless for three weeks.

I hate that eating has kind of become a chore. Booo.
I really need a haircut. Last time I had it cut they put so many crazy layers into it and really I would rather it be closer to one length, with layering at the ends. So I am trying to grow out the shortest pieces, which are still too short to get into a ponytail. Luckily my hair is growing very fast and thick. I want to chop three inches off the longest pieces and bring it all up a bit.
This weekend I’m going to plant root vegetables in the ground. I have heard the sun is supposed to come out.
After the 15th of April we are going to be extremely broke for a while. Perfect timing, huh. We get to kind of start at square one as far as saving for the baby and my lost income. I wonder when we’ll be that family that gets a refund. I haven’t gotten one since 2005. What is that alleged tax incentive for marriage? Because we have never enjoyed it. We seem to owe more and more each year. Ugh. Okay I’ll stop, I have ranted about this enough already. It’s just by far the shittiest thing to have happened to us … since the exact same thing happened a year ago. Get your withholding adjusted to the right amount, everyone. It’s really, really important.
Next week: Brian is in SF and I am extremely jealous; I get physical therapy for my sciatica; second ultrasound for baby (genetic screening); BASEBALL SEASON BEGINS.

I have passed twelve weeks of gestation, so I permitted myself to set up a registry at Target Baby.
I saw a great deal of pastel pink and blue, and pastel green and yellow for “neutral.” Almost nothing in the color red, the first color that human eyes can see, and nothing in black (of course). I guess they didn’t get the memo that babies respond to bold colors, too. And that they don’t actually give a crap what color their bankie is, or if it matches the curtains. So it took a while to find anything I really liked. Finally found some red and gold bedding, and a very cuuuute beige organic cotton crib set with little jungle aminals on it. Squee! I also delighted in the fact that Target carries bumGenius cloth diapers, and plenty of organic cotton choices for blankets, washcloths, towels, etc. Target seems to have lots of basics, but not much that I personally consider cool or cute.
So on my coffee break this afternoon I stepped into Tottini, on Yale Ave. OMG the cuteness. I wandered around and kinda wanted to buy everything. Little wooden rocking horses, baby slings, Barack Obama onesies, etc etc. It’s pricier than Target, obviously, but there are a few things that are worth the expense, like eco-friendly plastic bottles. Also, observe:
I think we’ll get our crib from Craigslist. I’ve already seen some Bainbridge Island mommies selling their $500 cribs for $100 on there. The best would be one that converts into a toddler bed, but again, something we can find used pretty easily. We would just get the mattress and bedding new. YES FASCINATING.
Anyway.
It occurred to me this afternoon that so far in my pregnancy, it has been kind of all about me, physically. I can’t feel or sense the baby, so I have been experiencing it in the abstract almost…. like, I feel sick, I feel hungry all the time, I feel tired or sore, and so on. It’s been all about my body. Now that I am almost in the second trimester, I expect that very soon I will be aware that this is actually about everything that is happening to someone else.

Though it’s really week nine, but whatev.
We went to my first OB appointment Friday and my doctor used a special amplifier on my abdomen to allow us to hear the fetal heartbeat. whoosh whoosh whoosh whoosh! it said. Best part of the exam.
Doc also said I need to basically graze all day, and load up on protein and fats to keep nausea at bay. So cheese, yogurt, lean meats, nuts, etc. I am now able to eat more foods, so I need to pace myself a lot better. Friday night I literally ate pickles and ice cream (not at once).
Did you know there is something called a “push present”? It was invented by greedy mommies who think they deserve diamonds and expensive handbags as a gift from their husbands for delivering the baby. It is really called that, too. Disgusting. There are threads about this on one of my pregnancy forums. Fortunately a lot of women share my view that this idea is extremely distasteful. One woman started a thread about how mad she was at her husband for not giving her a card and push present after the baby was born. Lots of people responded with, “um isn’t the BABY the ‘push present’?”
I thought I might be showing already, but turns out I’m mainly just bloated. I need more water.
Yesterday we finally started building our backyard vegetable garden. We got 36 cinder blocks and are building a 16″ high stone wall in a square, which will be filled with a raised bed. The cool part is that the holes in the middle of the blocks will be filled in with dirt and I will plant herbs there — the kind that keep pests out. I need to know a few of these besides onions. Anyone?
I started my seeds on Saturday: tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, zucchini, parsley, basil, thyme. Carrots and radishes will be started outdoors.
