fetal… pole?

The head is on the left. It’s my little tadpole!

This is much cooler in live video form. Ultrasound stills really don’t compare to watching it on the monitor in real time.

I surround you

It seems like very few of the people on my friends list are blogging lately. Come on! Well, I guess that goes for me too, so I am trying to make an effort to change that. Of all the times in my life, now is the time I ought to be documenting what is going on with me.

I go to bed at 10pm. This is pretty much standard for me; I get up early for work, and I also love to sleep. Lately I go to bed feeling more exhausted than usual. I finish my nightly regimen (brush teeth, remove contacts, wash face, moisturize face), turn off the light, and lay in bed on my back. Gotta enjoy that while I still can. I listen for the sound of rain outside. Last night it was perfectly still. I place both hands on my belly and think. I close my eyes. Sometimes I start thinking of a story from my novel, picturing every detail. This helps me sleep, because it kind of feels like a dream.

Last night as usual, I woke up at 2am and had to pee. I walked the five steps to the toilet. Sometimes Kona gets up and walks into the bathroom to look at me, all sleepyfaced. Then she turns around and goes back to her bed. After peeing, I drink some water, and lay down again. I hope I can get back to sleep before nausea sets in. Luckily, last night I did, and didn’t wake up until six. I ate two crackers while listening to the radio in the dark.

I still felt sick as soon as I was vertical. Brian was still in bed so I decided to feed the animals. Canned pet food does not smell so good, but I got through it. Then I had a bowl of cereal with strawberries in it. It seemed to calm my tummy.

A couple hours later I was walking into work though, and feeling seasick again, as well as getting that jittery low blood sugar feeling. So I went straight to Vivace for a muffin. I also got a short latte, reasoning that I needed the milk AND the espresso. I am limiting myself to about two coffee drinks per WEEK. I’ve noticed that doing this actually makes the caffeine work like it’s supposed to.

stray

Today while walking Kona, we saw an unleashed dog running along a busy road by our house, no guardian in sight. She trotted up to meet Kona, then ran away. As we walked along we realized this stray dog was kind of following us, though staying ahead of us. She also kept crossing the road, nearly being hit by cars twice. She was a large yellow mutt with dark points on her face. She was pretty skinny, dirty, with patches on her fur around her hindquarters.

We were approaching the highway, and knew she would just run out into traffic and maybe be killed. By this point we knew we had to do something. Brian coaxed her over and took her collar. No ID tag, but there was a license. We called Animal Control, then the police. Neither of them were able to do anything. One suggested we take the dog home, put her in our car, and drive her ten miles to Silverdale Humane Society.

Plans for hanging out downtown abandoned, we walked back home, Brian holding the dog’s collar to save her from running in the road again. We reached our street and let go of her, but of course she followed us to our house. So we put her in the backyard, gave her water, and called the Humane Society again.

Someone there used the number on the license to find the owner’s address and phone number. The dog lived around the corner from us. Of course. We leashed the dog and walked her to her house. She was terrible on the leash and was probably never walked. Her house was tiny, at the end of a gravel road. A shiny new red pickup truck was out front, but the rest of the place looked impoverished. Right away we saw that the gate to the backyard was open, so we put the dog in and closed it.

Brian knocked on the door and two little girls answered. We told them we had found their dog. They had nothing really to say about it, not even thank you. I think they were home by themselves. We left. The dog watched us go, standing in her muddy yard, where she undoubtedly spent her entire life, caged, separated from the warmth and companionship of her owner’s den.

Why do people who obviously hate dogs, own dogs? Why??

Tonight I ordered a couple of Bella Bands. A Bella Band is an elastic piece of lycra one wears over the tummy and over the top of one’s pants when one wants to walk around with their fly undone because buttoning up one’s jeans has become uncomfortable, yet one is not yet ready to transition into the world of full on panel-pants. I very much look forward to their arrival.

Lunch today was melon and brown rice. Dinner was sourdough toast, a fruit smoothie, and half of a butternut squash. See this is the kind of diet I should have been on when I was trying to lose weight. Sigh.

For now, low sodium triscuits are my friends.

fun internet meme

1 – Go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random
The first random wikipedia article you get is the name of your band.

2 – Go to http://www.quotationspage.com/random.php3
The last few words of the very last quote of the page is the title of your first album.

3 – Go to http://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days
Third picture, no matter what it is, will be your album cover.

4 – Use photoshop or similar to put it all together.

I’ve done a different version of this with song titles, this one was fun too.

fatigue

This weekend I feel like I could easily have just slept the entire time. Yet I managed to get up each day and feed myself, which is imperative to quell the nausea.

We took Kona for a nature walk on Saturday through some woods just outside of town. It was quite beautiful. When we got back home I fell on the couch, kicked off my shoes, and slept for an hour. My appetite has been nonexistent or strange. I decided on rice, cheese, and broccoli for dinner that night.

Sunday I slept in again, then got up and made apple oatmeal. Then I felt frustrated and upset about the state of our kitchen. I kept smelling garbage or something. I wanted the kitchen to be spotless. But of course I was too tired to do much about it. Took another nap. Then we walked Kona downtown for hot drinks. It was a gorgeous day.

Got home and again just wanted to sleep. But I stayed up and made dinner. Watched the Oscars, then showered and went to bed. I have been having vivid, bizarre dreams every night. Woke up at 5am and ate a graham cracker. Darling husband brought me breakfast in bed at 6:30 — cereal with raspberries.

It was so sunny and pretty this morning but now it’s just overcast.

presidential day

Today I went to Seattle and had an awesome pedicure with my mom. It was my treat for her birthday, which was yesterday. I ordered the $47 pedi — I figured why not since I have a feeling I haven’t had a pro pedicure in… three years? Jesus. Anyway it was so good. The polish on my toenails was secondary, the best part was the buffing of my heels and soles, pushing down cuticles, the salt scrub, lotion, oil, massage, hot towel. Ahhh. A facial for my feets. They are so soft now.

We also went to my mom’s favorite yarn shop, a few doors away. They were having a big sale, 40% off everything, so we picked up some yarn to make Kona a cute sweater. Also about eight balls of variegated yarn to make a sweater coat for me. They had a sample in the shop which I tried on and knew I would like it. My mom asked me before christmas if I wanted a sweater coat; I said I didn’t think so, but after seeing this pattern I changed my mind. It has a high funnel neck and short sleeves, to be layered over a long-sleeved tee. The colors are shades of gray and black. It’ll be really cute! For the cool parts of spring I can wear it as a coat, maybe. Or just store it for fall when I have my regular body back.

We have so much food in the house right now. I’ve been cooking a lot. Last night I made a huge pot of ham and bean soup, from scratch, including soaking the beans. Have bags of carrots and celery all prepped to be taken to work. Container of pineapple quarters, for Brian’s protein shakes. Big bag of swiss chard, for tomorrow. Leftover refried beans, chopped steak (from Valentines Day), and tonight’s spaghetti. We cleaned and organized the pantry yesterday so now we can actually see and find everything. Realized we have a LOT of dry cereal, no more buying that this month.

And here I am sleepy again at 9:30. It’s a good thing I love to sleep.

We’re not doing anything “special” for v-day today (except Brian is making me something for dinner), but I do love these flowers.

Not the most stereotypically “romantic” thing in the world, but last night at the market, getting groceries, we noticed the mammoth floral displays out front, of dozens of different cut flowers. Brian let me pick out whatever I wanted. So I chose four kinds of stems; tulips, purple freesia, roses, and lilies. I wanted curly willow too but the only one they had was like a huge four-foot-tall branch.

It reminded me of how my garden will explode with color in a few months. Can’t wait.

likeness

Okay I have figured out who these American Idol contestants remind me of.

I have such a love/hate relationship with this show. I wish my husband felt the same way but he just hates it. He hates a lot of stuff that I like. Oh well.

stovetop oatmeal

the recipe, by request:

Ingredients:

1 apple
1 tsp brown sugar
dash of cinnamon
handful golden raisins (or craisins, or other dried fruit)

1 heaping cup of regular rolled oats
1 1/2 cups milk or water or combination of each
dash of salt

1. Core apple and chop into thin slices or small cubes. You can leave skin on. Saute apple in a saucepan with brown sugar, cinnamon, and dried fruit on low heat, covered, stirring occasionally, until fruit is cooked, about ten minutes. Remove from saucepan and set aside.

2. In the same saucepan, add liquid. Bring to a simmer and watch carefully that it does not scald or boil over, it should just begin to bubble around the edges. Add salt. Stir in rolled oats. Add cooked fruit back in and stir around once.

3. Cover and remove saucepan from heat. Do not disturb for about 12-15 minutes. Then, stir well and serve. Makes two portions.

In the summer you can use seasonal fresh fruit like blueberries or cherries. Also you can add fresh cut bananas. Another option is to add a spoonful of peanut butter before removing from heat. DO NOT add any kind of protein powder; it becomes gummy and inedible in oatmeal!
