(Pasted from the New York Times)
Nutritionist and author Jonny Bowden has created several lists of healthful foods people should be eating but aren’t. But some of his favorites, like purslane, guava and goji berries, aren’t always available at regular grocery stores. I asked Dr. Bowden, author of “The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth,†to update his list with some favorite foods that are easy to find but don’t always find their way into our shopping carts. Here’s his advice.
1. Beets: Think of beets as red spinach, Dr. Bowden said, because they are a rich source of folate as well as natural red pigments that may be cancer fighters.
How to eat: Fresh, raw and grated to make a salad. Heating decreases the antioxidant power.
2. Cabbage: Loaded with nutrients like sulforaphane, a chemical said to boost cancer-fighting enzymes.
How to eat: Asian-style slaw or as a crunchy topping on burgers and sandwiches.
3. Swiss chard: A leafy green vegetable packed with carotenoids that protect aging eyes.
How to eat it: Chop and saute in olive oil.
4. Cinnamon: May help control blood sugar and cholesterol.
How to eat it: Sprinkle on coffee or oatmeal.
5. Pomegranate juice: Appears to lower blood pressure and loaded with antioxidants.
How to eat: Just drink it.
6. Dried plums: Okay, so they are really prunes, but they are packed with antioxidants.
How to eat: Wrapped in prosciutto and baked.
7. Pumpkin seeds: The most nutritious part of the pumpkin and packed with magnesium; high levels of the mineral are associated with lower risk for early death.
How to eat: Roasted as a snack, or sprinkled on salad.
8. Sardines: Dr. Bowden calls them “health food in a can.†They are high in omega-3’s, contain virtually no mercury and are loaded with calcium. They also contain iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, copper and manganese as well as a full complement of B vitamins.
How to eat: Choose sardines packed in olive or sardine oil. Eat plain, mixed with salad, on toast, or mashed with dijon mustard and onions as a spread.
9. Turmeric: The “superstar of spices,†it may have anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties.
How to eat: Mix with scrambled eggs or in any vegetable dish.
10. Frozen blueberries: Even though freezing can degrade some of the nutrients in fruits and vegetables, frozen blueberries are available year-round and don’t spoil; associated with better memory in animal studies.
How to eat: Blended with yogurt or chocolate soy milk and sprinkled with crushed almonds.
11. Canned pumpkin: A low-calorie vegetable that is high in fiber and immune-stimulating vitamin A; fills you up on very few calories.
How to eat: Mix with a little butter, cinnamon and nutmeg.
+ + +
I love nearly all of these foods, though I am not that familiar with Swiss chard.

Made some fresh food for Kona today: 1/3 lb. ground beef, 2 c. brown rice, carrot, yam, flax seed oil, kelp powder, alfalfa leaf. Cooked it in a pot and then let it cool, gave her a cup of it with 1/4 cup of good kibble. She devoured it.
Anyone who has more similar recipes, please pass along. Bulk rice and carrots etc are cheap, but I’d like to keep the protein costs down. What about chicken backs? Those are cheap because people don’t like to eat them, right? I wonder where I can buy those. And can the dogs just crush the bones with their teeth? Christine, Liz?
Anyway, she loved it and I think we’ll make it her dinner going forward. The batch I made today made a lot, maybe five or six days worth, and probably cost about $2.00. Yep, that is cheaper than feeding her canned + kibble. And it’s real, whole food.

1. Package departs Memphis, TN, Saturday 1/3 at 6:18pm. Scheduled delivery date is 1/8 (today).
2. Package arrives Salt Lake City, Sunday 1/4 at 11:38pm.
3. Package spends the next two days sitting there gathering dust for no particular reason.
4. Package departs Salt Lake City on 1/6 at 8:17pm.
5. “ADVERSE WEATHER CONDITIONS”, Seattle, WA 12:28 am, early Wednesday (1/7) morning. Of course the big rainstorm didn’t start until about 12 hours later.
6. Package arrives in Portland, OR (?!) on 1/7 at 10:51pm. It is presumably still there.
The rain from last night has closed a long section of I-5 between here and Portland.
One imagines that if my package hadn’t lingered for two days in Salt Lake City, presumably so that it wouldn’t arrive early heaven forfend, it wouldn’t now be made LATE by weather.
Who knows when I’ll get it now.

I’ve been using Vaseline as my makeup remover for the past couple days. It really works, and it’s cheap. It’s allegedly what actual models use. Small pot: 97 cents.
Pretty good birthday today, all things considered. Brian gave me a pair of gorgeous, huge, black pearl earrings — the dangley kind, not studs. I love them. I received so many kind messages from all kinds of pals. I had my makeup done at the Chanel counter and she made me look gawjus (though I did need lots of Vaseline for those smoky eyes tonight). Brian took me to dinner and we had a wonderful time. Lemon custard tart for dessert, and it even had a candle. Y’all know what I wished for.
Came home to a few nice presents from family and friends, and a dog who was as usual overjoyed to see us. I need sleep. I still feel stuffed.

It’s snowing, again. This is unexpected. Allegedly will turn to rain overnight. I shall believe it when I see it. I have plans tomorrow. Many plans. Please let them not be fouled by stupid western WA non-snow-removal.
Anyway I ordered some framed posters tonight. Here’s one.

Today was pretty busy. I got up and did some yoga on the Wii Fit. Then had breakfast, and more Wii Fit, totaling one hour. I have used it every day since I got it for Christmas, so ten days now. I like the strength training and yoga best, since I was lacking in those areas. The music gets stuck in my head a lot, though. I wish there was a minimal sound mode. The training bots tend to chatter throughout the routines and it gets really annoying.
We took down our tree and holiday decorations tonight, and also hung a lot of framed pictures. I had some prints and posters framed this week and picked them up today. They came out beautiful. It changes the rooms so very much to have something on the walls. Our house is finally coming together. We have a big art project planned for it as well, which will hopefully get started soon.
Kona needs a walk, then we make dinner and maybe watch “Lars and the Real Girl.”
